The IRS and Garden of Eden: Payback Is Hell

Hope Taylor

The recent news of a 17-year-old Oregon high school student's arrest last month on charges of producing explosives with plans of detonating them at his school is a chilling reminder that our culture is in stage four crisis. When dealing with cancer, medical experts describe stage four as "once in the blood stream, the cancer cells can go just about anywhere in the body, form new colonies and spread further. This is the stage of distant spread" (1).

Another recent indicator of a culture in crisis is the news of the Internal Revenue Service's moral and probable illegal discriminatory practice of ideological ethnic cleansing. It is well documented that the IRS scrutinized certain conservative and religious groups' applications for tax-exempt status to the point of "asking applicants what books they have read and even the content of their prayers" (2). On Wednesday, May 22, Lois Lerner, head of the IRS tax-exempt unit, was called to testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. After stating her innocence, she then took the Fifth and was excused from the hearing. She has since been placed on paid leave from her position, which in the past four years she received $740,931 in salary and bonuses.

Our pulpits, government offices, businesses and homes are infected with a not so rare, yet culturally fatal disease we'll call "Acute Accountability Avoidance Syndrome" or AAAS. AAAS is not a new disease. In fact, we see its origin in the Garden of Eden when the original first family made the calculated decision that it was in their best interest to do what Dr. Gary North calls "inverting the hierarchy" (3). Adam and Eve had been placed in the garden by God and given responsibilities for which they would be accountable to Him, one another, and future generations. When they ate of the only tree in the garden that God had told them not to eat from, they set AAAS in motion. They inverted God's order through this willful act and therefore submitted themselves to the serpent, and injected humanity with a spiritually lethal dose of irresponsibility and cultural deformity. What Lois Lerner and many other high level government officials have done in recent days with cameras rolling and under public scrutiny is an attempt to hide from truth, cover themselves from legal liabilities, and shift the blame. As a believer, when you hear these recent reports of self-preservation on the altar of irresponsibility, there is no doubt a deep feeling of grief and a cry for justice is stirred.

Genesis 3:10 says Adam heard the sound of Thee in the garden and hid. In verse 11, when God asked him who told him he was naked, Adam shifted blame to the woman and sidestepped his responsibility all in a vain attempt to avoid accountability. When Eve was interrogated by God for her actions, she then reverted to what should have been her pre-meal behavior and she followed the lead of Adam. Like him, she shifts the blame to another and in this case, the serpent. Thus "Acute Accountability Avoidance Syndrome" was birthed in the garden when Adam and Eve violated God's order, abandoned their social responsibilities to one another, and set in motion the bitter fruit we see today in our culture.

An often misunderstood passage is verse 10 concerning when Adam said he heard the sound of God in the garden. The tendency is to read this and miss a critical building block for our lives, families, businesses, governments and communities. God has built into foundation of life the principles of assignments and accountability. When God gave the first couple their individual and corporate assignments, He also demonstrated the principle of accountability and its importance to building anything that has lasting value. What Adam and Eve heard on their final day in the garden was "this voice --- an ear splitting, earth shattering roar . . . blasting its way like an express train through the garden: the thundering Voice of the Lord caused by the beating of the angels' wings" (4). God made a statement that day and set in motion the reality of responsibility and accountability. As followers of Jesus --- those called to disciple nations, grow healthy families, lead prosperous businesses, govern cities, and build effective ministries --- the recent stage four events are clear reminders that when accountability is optional, the mission will be aborted.

God Himself and through His legal representatives on the earth, the Church will uncover those who attempt to hide behind their own idols and bring righteous judgment on all who shift the blame to others. May I say it this way, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, while not perfect, will be a tool in His hand to address the ungodly and cultural cancer of Acute Accountability Avoidance Syndrome as practiced by the IRS. This pervasive practice, whether in the White House, our House, or the IRS, cannot be tolerated.

Action Points

1) Personally review your life and examine it for AAAS. Take responsibility for the assignments God has entrusted you with and activate accountability checks with trusted people.

2) Review any business, ministry or community organization you're involved in and ask if accountability is practiced and encouraged.

Prayer Points

1) God told Moses He had given heed to the cries of the oppressed Egyptians in Exodus 3. Pray He would continue to come down, expose tyrannical government practices that oppress the people it should serve, and render just judgments so all may fear.

2) Pray for those you lead and for those who are leaders in your life, whether it be in the family, local church, business, ministry network or civil government.
