As of August 1, 2012, 98 days remain until the most important presidential election in American history! On November 6, Americans will go to the voting booth and cast their ballot for local, state and national leaders. The 2013 class of civil leaders will experience the exuberance of victory, which will quickly fade into the gravity of leading the greatest nation in modern times through perilous waters. What we as followers of Jesus and those entrusted as cultural watchmen do in the next 98 days can be unprecedented for life, liberty and mankind. Our assignment, if we choose to accept it, can stop the tsunami of unbridled and unrestrained civil leaders who at times act as though they are self-appointed surrogate gods.

This is not an election about Democrats, Republicans or Independents. If the Church falls prey to this thinking, then we are walking the same path as the younger of two sons in Luke 15 who abandoned his position of influence, and through undisciplined living, was demoted to the pit and reduced to an animalistic type of self-survival instinct. As representatives of our God, we function in the Kingdom of God and are called to live as responsible and mature people who think from a Biblically informed perspective. When politics, ethnicity, nationality and economics take priority over the Word of God and our devotion to its eternal truths, we find ourselves in opposition to Him and are like Hymenaeus and Alexander who shipwrecked their faith (1 Timothy 1:19, 20).

In 2012, the Church must vote responsibly and with Kingdom revelation. In this election there are issues at stake that will determine America’s future for decades and it is critical to understand this election is not simply about the next four years — its momentum will easily span 50 years. In this article, we will discuss three primary issues and present a Biblical example of how a civil ruler was used to enslave God’s people.

In 2012, the landmark issue is the freedom of religion. The First Amendment of The Bill of Rights states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Recently, the Catholic Church filed a lawsuit against the Obama Administration for violating their freedom of religion, which is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. This mandate to address a serious grievance is being led by Cardinal Dolan and the Archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Wuerl and the Archdiocese of Washington D.C., as well as forty other Catholic Archdioceses and Dioceses, organizations and universities. Concerning the reason for the lawsuit, Ken Blackwell, former Ohio Secretary of State and current Senior Fellow of Family Empowerment at the Family Research Council, provides a good explanation: “One of the most ominous assaults on religious freedom is the proposed Health and Human Services contraception mandate. There has been nothing comparable to this in 225 years in this country. If the federal government can force not only Catholic institutions, but those of many other faith communities, and small businesses, and family-owned firms to provide drugs that can cause abortions or chemical contraceptives that violate their beliefs, then the First Amendment to the Constitution has effectively been repealed” (Blackwell).
